Lattice on Walls

Monday, April 29, 2013

It seems I  still have wall treatments on the brain, and the latest option I want to share with you is using lattice on your walls.  And I'm not talking about lattice or trellis wallpaper, I mean real lattice. The kind they sell at Lowe's.

After sourcing images for this treatment, I've come to the conclusion that it's pretty versatile.  It can go casual, as demonstrated in the next few photos.

Office of New Orleans decorator Vesta Fort

In this Paris apartment the lattice is backed with mirror, and is used in a formal setting.

Here's a modern interpretation of a custom trellis design I found on Apartment Therapy

Original source unknown
Again, the treatment above is certainly custom made, but has a modern feel.

As does this wall treatment, which was made to mimic the iron railing outside the window.

So what do you think?  Like the lattice?

Hand Painted Walls

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Are you like me and love the look of wallpaper but dread the expense/task of putting it up - and worse- one day having to remove it? Well, I've found some smart and courageous folks who have found a way around the heartache of wallpaper installation and removal. They created their own wallpaper with a little paint and a lot of talent.

Exhibit "A".  North Carolina designer Shannon Berry recreated Schumacher's "Birds and Butterflies" with a Sharpie.  And some paint.  Inspired?  The link below the photo will take you to the tutorial.

Who could resist Patricia Shackleford's interpretation of her favorite Gracie paper in 2011?

I absolutely adore this rendition of Oh Joy!'s Petal Pusher.

My friend Cris was inspired by the papers of de Gournay when she designed her new dining room.

And of course, the mother of all hand-painted walls that launched a bizillion blogger "swoons", Danika Herrick's recreation of Schumacher's Chiang Mai Dragon.

I started a little hand-painted wallpaper project of my own but it fell by the wayside about an eighth of way through because of a little "Challenge" I was participating in.  I chose a pattern that I think might be foolproof.

I'll let you know when that project is back on track.

Bullion Fringe - Is it Dead to You??

Sunday, April 21, 2013

I really want to hear your opinion on this one, even though I'm sure the majority of you will say (hell) no.  But the subject is bullion fringe, and I'm wondering if there would ever be a snowball's chance in hell that you would consider using it. Anywhere.  For anything.
OK mostly I'm wondering about using bullion fringe on furniture.   Like the fringe on the settee in this shot.  Would you ever do that?  Or even consider it as an option?

Meg Braff in House Beautiful

I think most of us would rule out bullion fringe because it seems old fashioned and a little stuffy, but in the space above I don't think the room reads "formal" at all.  I think the seagrass rug, the fabric choices and the soft color palette help knock down the fussiness.

I don't know why this Pinterest image is so grainy, but I wanted to use it because I thought the use of bullion fringe in such a modern setting was interesting.

I love this image because all of the design elements are so traditional, but (to me), the space feels modern. And don't they all look happy with those bullion fringe trimmed sofas?

Have you figured out which way I'm leaning?  Could you ever see yourself with bullion fringe trimmed anything?

Favorite Pieces

Friday, April 19, 2013

What?  Friday already????

Before we get this weekend underway, I want to share a few of my favorite pieces from last weekend's shopping trip in Atlanta.

How cute is this 1960s Drexel night stand?  I love the brass caps on the legs and the marble top.

I think this piece is worthy of a bedroom like this.  Poodle optional of course.

Agreed?  Call/email me.  Let's make this happen at your place!

Also got a PAIR of these fab mid-century mini consoles.

Are dying over the hardware and burlwood details?  Me too!  I think one will take up residence at The Dollhouse in my teeny tiny foyer.
So handsome.

And, you already know I love these little brass pharmacy lamps.

His twin is going to my booth, so grab it while its still there!

AND, if you're wondering what my favorite piece of furniture is in my home, head over to my gal Tiffany's blog and see for yourself!

Have a fantastic spring weekend, kids!!!

So here's what I've been up to

Monday, April 15, 2013

Happy tax day!  When I saw what would be going down around here this past weekend

I decided to get out of town.  And that's just what I did.

There was lots of shopping, and I found some exceptional pieces for my booth and for The Dollhouse!  So many great pieces that they deserve - and will have -a post all their own.

There was some restyling of Mom's secretary to accommodate her growing collection of blue & white porcelain.

New lighting got installed

for this nursery project.

There was some rug obsessing  and a final selection
for this dining room project

all topped off by this situation at Wal-mart.  (about 60 people ready to check out and 3 lanes open.)

Now fill me in on what you've been up to!  Taxes done? Extensions filed?  Good shopping finds?

India Hicks for HSN

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

Let me begin by saying I don't spend a lot of time watching HSN, but late Monday afternoon I succumbed when the listing on my tv guide read "India Hicks".  Wouldn't you be curious?  Apparently Ms. Hicks has put together a collection for HSN called "Island Living" that is inspired by her life at Hibiscus Hill in the Bahamas , and also by her design legend father David Hicks.

First, a few shots of India's home aka the partial inspiration for her collection.

Image from Caribbean Belle
Lots of white, lots of texture, and small doses of color. And a big 'ol sailboat for drama.

Again there are  light walls and lots of texture - this time with formal (by comparison) antiques.  Enormous bird cage(I think?) for drama.

White walls. Check.  Textural elements . Check. Something big and dramatic. Check.

And her HSN collection?  There are a few things that would absolutely be at home at India's place:.
Seagrass baskets for texture

Flying Irishmen Sailboat model for drama

Diamond throw, possibly inspired by her father's iconic La Fiorentina?

See what's left of the collection here.

You may want to follow her...

Monday, April 8, 2013

Happy Monday! I'm afraid I have to be brief today - I have a lot of unchecked items on my to-do list that need attention.

I  want to take a moment to point you to Lindajane Keefer on Pinterest.  If you haven't discovered her or her boards yet, then allow me the pleasure.

My favorite boards of Lindajane's are the ones that feature late design giants like Sister Parish

Billy Baldwin

and Mark Hampton

There's so much more. You can find Lindajane Keefer here.  A word of warning - there are over 47,000 pins - but they're good ones!

Also, thank you to Lindsey at Better After for featuring my family room makeover today!

Do you have any favorite pinners to share?

New Shop Items and Finds

Thursday, April 4, 2013

Good Thursday!  I hope you're having a good and productive week so far.  Today I want to share some new things I'm adding to my booth at Merchants On Main, and a few things I might be keeping here at Project Dollhouse.  Ready?

I'm kind of proud of myself for getting this one done.  I had only a yard & a half of fabric and the first cut I made was for the back of the chair and I cut the fabric a little too small.  Since the pattern has such a big repeat I had a hard time finding another part of the pattern that would fill the space properly. Luckily, the upholstery gods were smiling on me and it all worked out (after bullets were sweated).

I really lucked  out finding this Mid-Century white and gold china set. I'd love to keep it, but I just don't have the need or the space at home.  The set is by "Fascination" and has 38 pieces - including hard-to-find serving pieces like a gravy boat, platter, sugar and creamer.

This is the best rainy day garage photo I could come up with today.  I just finished up this gorgeous 5-drawer chest. Don't you love the pulls?  This piece is Mid-Century, made by Dixie and is solid oak under the new oil-based high gloss white finish.  Who doesn't need glamorous storage?

This one may take up permanent residence at the Dollhouse.  It's hand-painted silk and completely gorgeous.

Finally, I've loaded in this Mad Men-esque Mid-Century green pleather chair.  It has great details - can you see the brass caps on the legs?  It also has big brass nailheads on the side, but I neglected to get a picture of that.  It's in as-found but good vintage condition.

Wait, one more thing.  If you follow The Green Room Interiors on Facebook, you'll get to be the first to see new arrivals in my booth, so "like" us!
